Food for longevity: Keys to living more than 100 years, according to science.

In the constant search for the formula for a longer and healthier life, a British study published in the journal Nature Food highlights the importance of adopting healthy eating habits from middle age to increase our chances of living beyond 100 years of age. . Based on data collected from the UK Biobank, this study reveals how certain dietary changes can be crucial in adding years of vitality to our lives.

Dietary changes: A path to longevity

The study, which analyzed 467,354 participants between the ages of 40 and 69, highlights that those who made significant changes in their diet towards healthier options experienced an increase of up to 10 years in their life expectancy. This underlines the importance of adopting healthier eating practices from midlife.

 

Key foods for a longer life

Among the foods associated with greater longevity, three groups stand out: nuts, legumes and whole grains. These foods, rich in essential nutrients, fiber and healthy fats, appear to play a crucial role in promoting long-term health.

 

Foods to avoid

In contrast, sugary drinks and red meat were identified as foods to avoid for those looking to maximize their life expectancy. The connection between a diet high in added sugars and processed red meat and health problems has been previously documented, and this study supports the idea that limiting their consumption may be beneficial for longevity.

Benefits over time

The study results suggest that the sooner dietary changes are made, the greater the longevity benefits. Those who adopted a healthy diet at age 40 experienced the greatest increase in life expectancy, although even those who made changes later in life still saw significant benefits.

Importance of additional factors

In addition to diet, the study considered factors such as age, sex, sociodemographic habits, smoking, alcohol consumption and physical activity. These additional elements were taken into account to more fully understand how dietary changes relate to longevity.

This study reinforces the idea that our diet plays a crucial role in our longevity and quality of life. Adopting a diet rich in nuts, legumes and whole grains, while limiting your consumption of sugary drinks and red meat, could be the path to a longer, healthier life.
