The Inspiring Journey of Karla Mossi
Engineer, Scientist, and Leader:
In the heart of Honduras began the story of a woman who has broken barriers and become a beacon of female empowerment in the fields of engineering and science. Karla Mossi graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) and is now a renowned Nuclear Scientist, serving as the director of the Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Ph.D. program at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).
Karla grew up in a household surrounded by males, which gave her a unique perspective and special strength from a young age. After high school, she chose to study Mechanical Engineering—even though she didn't know exactly what it entailed—because she loved mathematics and saw it as a good opportunity to leverage her talent with numbers.
Entering the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) at sixteen as the only woman in the mechanical engineering department was a challenging experience. Transitioning from an all-girls school to a male-dominated environment presented several challenges, including harassment, which she faced with courage and resilience.
During her university years, Karla witnessed the economic difficulties many of her peers faced. Encouraged by her parents to seek opportunities abroad, she enthusiastically applied to various universities in the United States. She was accepted for her master's degree at Old Dominion University in Virginia, where she quickly applied for and received a scholarship thanks to her grades and dedication.
Over time, Karla worked for NASA on high-impact projects like creating wind tunnels and testing airplanes, an experience she considered one of the most exciting.
However, the journey was not without its difficulties. Her initial shyness caused her to miss out on valuable opportunities, such as meeting renowned scientists. Over time, she learned the importance of stepping out of her comfort zone and seizing every opportunity presented to her.
Today, as a director at VCU, Karla has been instrumental in creating a unique Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering program. Her sensitivity and empathy have endeared her to her students, who see her as a mother figure.
Thanks to her leadership, the university received funding for international scholarships, a cause Karla passionately embraces, remembering her own challenges as a foreign student. This opportunity further solidified her commitment to education and the importance of providing opportunities to those who need them most.
Karla Mossi is a living example that with determination and effort, any dream is achievable. Her advice to young women is clear: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help, don’t be afraid to fail, and above all, dream big. Dive into the water, even if you don’t know how to swim. If you want it enough and work for it, you will achieve it. Enjoy the process, because every obstacle will only make you stronger.”
